Ontario Sledge Hockey Association Announces Roster for
2012-2013 Sledge Team Ontario

London, ON – The Ontario Sledge Hockey Association (OSHA) has announced the 17 players selected to play for Sledge Team Ontario (STO). The players will compete in five exhibition series including Amherstburg (Nov 25-27), Ottawa (Jan 4-6), North Bay (Feb 10-12) and Barrie (April 13-15).

Head coach Todd Sargeant (London) assembled Sledge Team Ontario at the Selection Camp that was conducted August 13th and 14 in Huntsville. The difficult task of finalizing the roster was completed with help from assistant coaches Tony Gale (Mississauga) and Brad Blanchard (Essex-Kent) and Manager Ken Cullum (Mississauga). Twenty-eight athletes were invited to try out for the team that is sponsored by Ontario’s Quest for Gold.

“This program has proven to be very valuable in the development of elite players in Ontario,” Sargeant said. “Over the past 3 years there have been 5 players that have moved from Sledge Team Ontario to play with the Canadian National Team. We are looking forward to working with this young group of sledge players.”

Thirteen players are returning to the team for the 2011-2012 season including goaltender Kevin Duchane (Mississauga), defensemen Brendan Blanchard (Essex-Kent), Rob Carmichael (Mississauga), Ashley Goure (Essex-Kent), Dave Grenier (Essex-Kent), and Cam Sinclair of London. The returning forwards are: Eric Baker (North Bay), Alain Bazinet (Ottawa), Karl Ludwig (Mississauga), Corin Metzger (Hamilton), Jordan Mino (North Bay), Heather Stewart (Essex-Kent), and Nick Tessier (Ottawa). Four players will join the team for the first time: goaltender Paul Carere (Woolwich) and forwards John Picco (Markham), Donovan Snel (Ottawa) and Kevin Sorley (Kitchener).

Sledge Team Ontario will kick off their competitive season in Niagara Falls (Oct 14-16) where they will take on the USA’s third Development Team. In 2010, they won two of three games against the USA National Development team while playing an exhibition series at Richmond, BC in the lead up to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

Sledge Team Ontario (STO) is the current form of an Ontario Sledge Hockey Association (OHSA) program that was created to participate in the first (and only!) World Junior Sledge Hockey Championships. Held in New Jersey in April 2007, this team won gold with a convincing 6-1 win over the host USA.

Seeing the positive benefits of conducting training elite sledge hockey players, OSHA put together the best players up to age 23 during the 2007-08 season. The 17 members of the U23 program travelled to Edmonton to compete in a five game exhibition tour against Senior club teams from the Edmonton area. OSHA was very dominant in winning 4 of 5 games (the one loss was 1-0 with Ontario having a 20-3 edge in shots on goal!).

STO in its current format started in 2008-09. After negotiating with the government of Ontario and its Ministry of Health Promotions, the top 16 players from all over Ontario were chosen after attending a Talent Identification Camp . These elite athletes continue to be funded in the Quest for Gold program through the Ministry of Health Promotion. These players are identified as having the best chance to compete for a position with Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team in the coming years.

In 2009-10 STO competed in a 6 game series with the United States Development Team. This culminated in a 3 game set in Vancouver during the Paralympics. STO won two of the games that were applauded for their intensity and action.

STO conducted its Selection Camp in Huntsville on August 13 and the players chosen had their first team practice on August 14 at the Summit Center there. The schedule for the season had training camps in Niagara Falls (October 14-16), Amherstburg (Nove 25-27), Ottawa (Jan 7-9), North Bay (Feb 10-12), Barrie (April 13-15) and Chicago (May 3-6).

The upcoming season will have the Selection Camp in London with training camps scheduled for Niagara Falls, Collingwood, Florida, Brantford and Toronto.
